One Man's Alaska

Last ninety days in Alaska?

July 1, 2011

I hate to even think about it, but with July 1st approaching tomorrow, there's a chance I could be entering my last ninety days as a resident of Alaska.

I don't want to get into all the details, but I am considering moving back to the Lower-48. After today's gorgeous one-hour drive north to see the Matanuska Glacier it's really hard for me to even think about this. That drive is probably my third-favorite drive in Alaska, and includes all sorts of beautiful scenery, including the glacier, and I always see moose on that road north of Sutton. But I have to consider this.

Admittedly I could probably try harder, but to date I haven't been able to find enough programming work in the Mat-Su Valley to sustain me, so that's part of the situation. Last week I even interviewed with a programming company in Anchorage, but I turned them down before they had a chance to make me an offer. (I don't want to get into that either, other than to say it didn't feel like a good fit right now.)

I may write more about this over time, but that's the short version of what I'm thinking right now.

In happier news, after working with a client here recently, he called me a "rock star" after seeing my work. I usually prefer cash, but that was very nice to hear. :)
