This image (from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Geohphysical Institute) shows a map of where the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) may be most visible tonight.

Reading that the Northern Lights ("Aurora Borealis") might be visible last night in Fairbanks, Alaska, I hopped in the car around 9 p.m., and drove as far north as I could, trying to find a clearing in the sky. This photo of a clearing in the sky was taken at 11:25 p.m., somewhere south of Cantwell, in the area known as Denali State Park.

I've lived in Alaska on and off for almost a year now, and still haven't seen the Northern Lights, so when I checked the University of Alaska-Fairbanks aurora page and it said the aurora was going to be active the next few nights, well, let's just say that I'm throwing some food, water, and clothes in the car at 8:30 p.m., and heading farther north, in search of clear skies.
Adios, amigos ...

Even in a nice residential neighborhood in Wasilla, Alaska, residents don't get the mail delivered to their homes. Instead, it's dropped off in boxes like these, at the entrance to the neighborhood. At least this is better than the post office box, which was all I could get when I lived in Talkeetna.

While on a walk yesterday I decided to take this photo of a typical Alaska neighborhood road. Many roads are paved, but many roads are not, even in a relatively large town like Wasilla. This photo was actually taken in a very nice neighborhood, with home prices probably starting at $250K-$300K.

Here's a second view of the Alaska salmon fishing report sign from the Fred Meyer grocery store in Wasilla, Alaska. If you ever need an up to date salmon fishing report, the sports department of Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart, and other sporting stores is a great source of Alaska fishing information.

If you happen to be in Anchorage, Alaska this weekend, you have a chance to watch the Arctic Thunder Air Show on both Saturday and Sunday (July 31 and August 1, 2010). Here's a little bit of information on the air show from the Anchorage Daily News:

Look, up in the sky, it's a bird ... it's a plane ... no, it's the sun! Quick everyone, the sun is shining for the first time in weeks, stop whatever you're doing, and run outside!
I think there may be an Alaska state law something like that: If the sun is shining, workers are entitled to walk outside and soak it in for a little while. If not, there should be. :)
