Talkeetna - A cabin, a man, a squirrel, and a stuffed animal

September 19, 2010

Did I mention that I lived in a cabin in Talkeetna, Alaska in 2007 ... with a squirrel? Turns out it was the squirrel's cabin, and I was just a visitor. You can read all about that at "The Legend of Talkeetna, Alaska Squirrel".

Alaska sky wallpaper photo

September 19, 2010

Wow, I had forgotten about this amazing photo of the sky. I believe I took it either in Healy, Alaska or Fairbanks, Alaska, and I now use it as a wallpaper background on my computer. It has not been doctored in any way.

A few signs I ran across in Homer, Alaska. The bottom sign is very funny if you happen to skip the "feeding" part at the top.

Mountain hovering over Alaska road

September 19, 2010

I took this photo when driving from Alaska back to Kentucky back in 2007. I don't know the exact location of this mountain range, but it's somewhere north of Palmer, and possibly south of Glenallen.

Notice the wavy road. This is very typical of the road leading in and out of Alaska, and is due to permafrost.

A bike for winter

September 18, 2010

Looking for a bicycle you can ride in the winter? Look no further than the Salsa Mukluk, a bicycle created for winter bike riding, and advertised in the local Alaska newspapers. (I saw it advertised most recently in the Anchorage Press.) Slap a couple of snow tires on an off-road bike frame, and you're ready for some serious winter bicycle riding -- woot!

The Wasilla, Alaska sun report

September 18, 2010

A little more than a week ago a friend wrote and asked what time the sun was setting. Since we've had nothing but sunshine for the last two weeks it was easy to pay attention, and I noted that the last I saw of the sunlight then was about 9:15 p.m.

Last night I happened to be taking my trash out and I realized it was pretty dark. When I got back inside I looked at the clock and it was about 8:45p.m. In roughly a week the sun was setting thirty minutes earlier!
