2011 Iditarod ceremonial start in Anchorage, Alaska

March 5, 2011

2011 Iditarod news: Wow, do I have a lot to learn about the Iditarod. It turns out this morning (Saturday) is just the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in Anchorage, and even more importantly (for me), tomorrow morning (Sunday) is that Iditarod restart in Willow, Alaska. That's extremely good to know, because I was getting all ready to head out to Willow later this morning to watch the restart, lol.

As for the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in Anchorage, I was wondering what they were going to do about snow, since it's been a pretty dry winter here. (Maybe they all are, I don't know.) It turns out they started trucking in snow last night, so if you're out of state, and you see those Iditarod dogs rushing through the snowy streets of Anchorage, Alaska, well, it's a bit of a "made for Hollywood" type of event. But fear not, the real racing on the real snow starts Sunday afternoon.

The Official Iditarod website has more information on the Ceremonial race start in Anchorage, and they also just put up a page about the Iditarod Willow restart. I'm not big on shuttle buses and may try to get out early tomorrow to drive to the Willow restart ... but I'll try to talk to some local folks and see what else I can learn before then.
