One Man's Alaska

Best Wasilla Mexican restaurant

October 18, 2010

It feels like an oxymoron to write "Great Mexican food" and "Wasilla" in the same sentence, but I was just reminded of how good Senor Taco in Wasilla, Alaska is. I haven't been there all summer because of a gallstones/gallbladder health issue, so I'm just coming back from my first trip there since May, and I have to say, I'm in heaven. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that no only is Senor Taco the best Mexican food I've had in Wasilla, or even Alaska, it's some of the best Mexican food I've had anywhere, and hey, I've been to Mexico and New Mexico.

When you walk into Senor Taco you won't see anything special. It's a small, plain restaurant in the Carr's strip mall, and the inside looks somewhat similar to a Taco Bell, but more plain. But the food is something else. I usually order 2-3 tacos of different types, including carnitas and chorizo. You can get either soft-shell flour or corn tortillas, but I prefer the corn myself. They also have a salsa bar with a nice collection of homemade salsas. That line really gets to the heart of the matter -- all the food is homemade, and really excellent.

If you go there with family or friends, I recommend ordering a variety of different things off their taco and burrito menus, but really, I've never had anything bad. The service can be a little slow from time to time, but tonight it was excellent, which was great, because I was starving.

I can't think of anything else to write at the moment, other than mm-mmm, if I died right now, I'd be one satisfied camper.
