One Man's Alaska

From insomnia to amnesia

May 23, 2007

In my great Alaskan adventure I've gone from insomnia to amnesia. It goes like this:

After a long day of trying to find an apartment or rental home in Anchorage I came back to the hotel around 3:30pm. I was really tired, and since I'm on vacation, rather than fight it I thought I'd just take a nap.

After a good sleep (with the window shades open, since it is overcast with a light drizzle) I woke up and the alarm clock showed "5:00", which I assumed meant it was 5am. I sat up in bed, rubbed my eyes, and thought "Well, I'm awake, I might as well get up and start the day."

I then started thinking about what I was going to do today, and tried to remember what I decided about a few things last night. After a little while I finally realized there was no last night -- at least not yet -- and I hadn't decided anything. After a little checking I was able to confirm this -- it wasn't 5am, it was 5pm. :)

Earlier that same day ...

Earlier today I had a similar problem w/ the date, which I attributed to life on my little sabbatical. A lady at an extended stay hotel asked if I'd like to check in this Saturday, and after thinking about it for a little while, I couldn't remember what day today was. So I asked her -- turns out it's Wednesday -- and she had a good laugh.
